How many zeros in a billion?

I got this in an email from a co-worker on Friday and it really made me stop and think. Isn’t it amazing how desensitized we are to the word billions when it comes to our government spending wasting our money?!?

How many zeros in a billion? This is too true to be funny.

The next time you hear a politician use the Word ‘billion’ in a casual manner, think about whether you want the ‘politicians’ spending YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases:

A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.

A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain… let’s take a look at New Orleans…

Ignorant and Disrespectful

This is the letter I posted on our local newspaper’s forum tonight. I also forwarded it to the editor:

Today while driving through our home town, my family and I observed how truly ignorant and disrespectful the residents of our county have become.

A procession of fifteen to twenty cars was leaving a funeral home. Several cars in both directions pulled quickly to the right side of the road and stopped, just as I was taught you should always do when I was growing up. Several individuals continued ignorantly on their blissful way including some who had the audacity to even pass the procession in the left hand lane.

It is no wonder our prisons and welfare lines are so full. We as a society have failed to raise our children with even the very basic concept of caring and respect. Yet these are the same individuals that are demanding that the rest of us give them their dues. You must give respect to earn respect; it is not owed to you.

Where is the respect for the fallen residents of our cities? Are we that busy and self serving that we can’t pause for two or three minutes to show a little respect for a grieving family? Did you manage to find that sale item at the discount store that you so desperately needed? Was that appetizer you choked down worth your display of complete disregard for common courtesy?

I can only hope that when you and your family experience a loss in the future that you have a more compassionate and humble group of motorists on the road for your family member’s final ride.

Civil Protection Ordinance

The town council in Cherry Tree, Pennsylvania, population appx. 400, was supposed to vote on an ordinance requiring “all heads of households maintain a firearm along with ammunition”.

The measure would be symbolic at best since state law prevents municipalities from making their own gun laws. It does however indicate that people may be finally getting the big picture…..Police protection is most often too little, too late.
